Bunbury Embroidery Group

A love of hand embroidery brings us together as a group, and we share our knowledge, techniques and encouragement as easily as we share each other’s company.

HISTORY:

Bunbury Embroidery Group has been meeting weekly at the Stirling Street Arts Centre since October 1982. Original members, Jean James and Jess Cunningham were tutored at the Embroiderer’s Guild of Western Australia in Perth, developing their embroidery skills and passing these on to the group—some of whom are still members after more than 30 years!

WHO:

Currently, there are about 20 ladies meeting regularly and we welcome all new embroiderers, whether they are complete beginners or more experienced in hand embroidery. Some of us are members of the Western Australian Embroiderer’s Guild and visitors from other Embroidery Guilds are also most welcome.

WHEN:

We are a social group, meeting for a friendly stitch and chat on Thursdays from 10am until about 3pm.

HOW: (WHAT WE DO) SOMETIMES WE HAVE WORKSHOPS WHERE ONE OF US MIGHT SHARE SOME KNOWLEDGE INTO A PARTICULAR EMBROIDERY TECHNIQUE, OR WE CAN BE TUTORED BY A PROFESSIONAL EMBROIDERER; BUT MOST OF THE TIME WE WORK ON OUR INDIVIDUAL PROJECTS. SOME MIGHT BE WORKING ON BEAUTIFUL CROSS STITCH, HARDANGER AND ELIZABETHAN STYLE EMBROIDERY, WHILE OTHERS ARE TRYING THEIR HAND AT CREWEL, RIBBON OR GOLD WORK. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMEONE TO HELP OUT IF WE AREN’T ABLE TO GET A STITCH OR TECHNIQUE JUST RIGHT, AND MEMBERS ARE ABLE TO BORROW BOOKS FROM OUR EXTENSIVE REFERENCE LIBRARY.
