Stirling Street Arts Centre is a place where people come together to create, learn, share skills, build connections and contribute to our community.
Our Centre brings together more than 270 members, 18 member groups, facilitators, volunteers, staff and community partners across a diverse range of creative activities, workshops, exhibitions, events and community initiatives.
We are a purpose-driven organisation. The surplus we generate is reinvested into our Centre, our programs, our people and our community.
We are looking for new people to join our Board of Management and contribute to the future of Stirling Street Arts Centre.
You don’t have to be an artist to make a difference at an arts centre.
We are particularly interested in people who can strengthen our Board’s strategic, business and organisational capability. You might bring professional experience in business development, finance, governance, strategy, people, marketing, partnerships or another area that could help our organisation grow and thrive.
You might also bring valuable experience through community involvement, volunteering, creative practice or other organisations.
What matters is that you care about our purpose, are willing to contribute and have the capacity to be an active part of our Board.
Being part of our Board
Our Board provides governance and strategic leadership for Stirling Street Arts Centre. We work alongside our Centre Manager and staff team to support our purpose, sustainability and future direction.
Being a Board member is more than attending a monthly meeting. We are looking for people who will actively contribute to our collective work, bring their skills and perspective to the table, ask thoughtful questions and follow through on commitments.
Board members are expected to:
- Attend and actively participate in monthly Board meetings.
- Read Board papers and come prepared to contribute.
- Ask questions, listen to different perspectives and contribute constructively to decision-making.
- Make decisions in the best interests of Stirling Street Arts Centre and our purpose.
- Bring your skills, experience, knowledge, networks and perspective to our collective work.
- Declare and appropriately manage actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest.
- Respect confidentiality and the privacy of our members, staff, volunteers and community.
- Develop and maintain an understanding of our governance, financial, legal and other organisational responsibilities.
- Take an active interest in our Centre, our members, our programs and our strategic priorities.
- Follow through on commitments made outside of Board meetings.
You don’t need to know everything when you join us. We value people who are curious, willing to learn and prepared to contribute.
Who could contribute to our Board?
We are particularly interested in people who can strengthen the collective skills, experience and perspectives of our Board.
Experience in areas such as the following may be particularly valuable:
- Business development and organisational growth
- Strategic planning and organisational development
- Finance, accounting and financial oversight
- Governance, risk, law and compliance
- Arts, culture and the creative industries
- Fundraising, sponsorship and commercial or community partnerships
- People, culture and human resources
- Marketing, communications and digital engagement
- Business ownership or small business
- Local and State Government
- Community development and engagement
- Work Health and Safety
- Property, facilities and asset management
- Technology and digital systems
- Accessibility, inclusion and participation
This is not a checklist.
Professional experience is valuable, but so are community connections, practical knowledge, creative experience, lived experience and fresh perspectives.
We are particularly interested in people who can contribute to the long-term sustainability and development of Stirling Street Arts Centre, identify opportunities, build relationships and help us think strategically about our future.
A strong Board doesn’t mean a group of people who all think the same way. We value different perspectives and experiences, and people who can listen, challenge constructively and work together toward a shared purpose.

Before you express your interest
Please consider whether you have the time and capacity to be an active Board member.
Our Board generally meets monthly, with additional time required from time to time for reading papers, completing actions, participating in projects or working groups, and attending important Centre activities.
We don’t expect our Board members to give every spare minute to Stirling Street Arts Centre. We do need people who can reliably make space for the role and contribute as part of our collective work.
Board positions are voluntary.

You don’t need previous Board experience, and there are no perfect answers.
We are interested in both professional and community experience. If you have professional or business experience, we’d particularly like to understand how you could apply that experience to help Stirling Street Arts Centre grow, strengthen and achieve our purpose.
