BSS22: MASTERCLASS Explore Japanese-style Woodcuts

Monday January 10, 2022 - January 14, 2022
9:00 am - 1:00 pm
ECU – Studio 9, Bunbury Western Australia

Five-day printing workshop with Sue Dennis

Monday 10th- Friday 14th January, 9am-1pm each day

Ages 16+

In this intensive 20 hour workshop, participants will have the opportunity to explore this non-toxic, water-based method of printmaking, and be introduced to some of the basic techniques of woodcut printing in a Japanese style.
Japanese ukiyo-e (floating world) prints were introduced to Europe in the mid 1800’s transforming the style of many significant European artists of the day.
Sue will demonstrate some traditional and not-so traditional materials and techniques which can be utilised to produce contemporary mokuhanga (woodcut) prints which have the tonal watercolour-like flavour of traditional ukiyo-e.  During this week, participants will be encouraged to play and experiment with their images and the materials at hand, to produce 4-colour woodcut prints. All materials are included.

Suitability – this is an intermediate class for those who have had some previous relief printmaking experience.
Participants should please bring images suitable for a 4-colour woodcut print, sizes: 15 x 22 cm and/or 11 x 18cm.
